Intermediate muscles of the back Flashcards
Serratus posterior superior
Origin: ligamentum nuchae, spines of vertebrae C7-T3
Insertion: ribs 2-5, lateral to the angles
Action: elevates the upper ribs
Nerve: branches of the ventral primary rami of spinal nerves T1-T4
Artery: posterior intercostal aa. 1-4
Serratus posterior inferior
Origin: thoracolumbar fascia, spines of vertebrae T11-L2
Insertion: ribs 9-12, lateral to the angles
Action: pulls down lower ribs
Nerve: branches of the ventral primary rami of spinal nerves T9-T12
Artery: lowest posterior intercostal a., subcostal a., first two lumbar aa.
Splenius capitis
Origin: nuchal ligament, C3-T3 spinous processes
Insertion: occipital bone (lateral superior nuchal line, mastoid process)
Action: extension, lateral flexion and rotation to same side
Nerve: spinal nn. C2-C6 (dorsal primary rami, lateral branches)
Artery: deep cervical a., posterior intercostal a.
Splenius cervicis
Origin: spijous process of T3-T6
Insertion: Transverse processes of C1-C3
Nerve: Dorsal primary rami of spinal n.
Artery: Deep cervical a., posterior intercostal a.
Levator scapulae
Origin: transverse processes of C1-C4 vertebrae
Insertion: medial border of the scapula from the superior angle to the spine
Action: elevates the scapula
Nerve: dorsal scapular nerve (C5), also called deep branch of transverse cervical artery; the upper part of the muscle receives branches of C3 & C4
Artery: dorsal scapular a.
Rhomboid major
Origin: spines of vertebrae T2-T5
Insertion: medial border of the scapula inferior to the spine of the scapula
Action: retracts, elevates and rotates the scapula inferiorly
Nerve: dorsal scapular nerve(C5)
Artery: dorsal scapular a.
Rhomboid minor
Origin: spines of vertebrae C7-T1
Insertion: medial margin of the scapula inferior to the spine
Action: retracts, elevates and rotates the scapula inferiorly
Nerve: dorsal scapular nerve (C5)
Artery: dorsal scapular a.
