Intermediate ballistics Flashcards
Define external ballistics?
The study of the transition of the projectile from the internal to external ballistics that occurs in vicinity of the muzzle
What are the three parts muzzle energy is broken into?
- Motion of projectile 30%
- Energy of propellant gases 45%
- Heat retained by gun 25%
What are the two phases of gas flow field?
- The precursor to the projectile leaving the muzzle
- The main blast that follows
What is bottle shock and what are its two areas?
Bottle shock is the air pushed out by the projectile in the precursor phase. The compressed air is put under pressure and forms a shock wave when exiting the barrel.
- Barrel shock (sides)
- Mach disc (front)
Is there another bottle shock in the main blast field?
Yes, it also contains barrel shock and a mach disc
What is muzzle flash?
The light emitted in the vicinity of the muzzle by the hot gases and chemical reactions that occur within the propellant and its mixture with the surrounding air
What are the types of muzzle flash?
- Pre-flash
- Primary
- Muzzle glow
- Intermediate
- Secondary
P.P.M.I.S
What are some flash reduction methods?
- Muzzle devices (flash suppressors)
- Type of propellant
- Propellant additives
What are the 3 reason for muzzle devices?
- Reduce recoil
- Suppress flash
- Decrease report
What are three types of flash suppressors?
- Conical
- Slotted
- Bar
What are the two sources of muzzle blast?
- Blast shockwave
- Flash blast
Silencers can be used to reduce blast, what are the three types?
- Blast absorption
- Blast dissipation
- Blast containment and controlled release
How do flash suppression devices work?
- Break up the barrel shock
- Break up the mach disc
