Intermediate Algebra Flashcards
What is the Natural Number set? Its symbol?
1-inf “N”
what is the whole number set? Its symbol?
0-inf “W”
What is the Integer set? Its symbol?
all digits between negative and positive infinity (no decimals, fractions etc.) “Z”
What is a rational number? Its symbol?
in the form of a over b where a and b are integers and b is not 0. (Numbers that can be formed by an integer divided by an integer. “Q”
How do I know if a decimal is rational?
It terminates or it has a repeated pattern
What are irrational numbers? What is their symbol
They can’t be formed as a fraction of two integers (non-terminating decimals that don’t have a repeated pattern) “I”
What are “real numbers” What is their symbol?
Real numbers “R” Contain all sets of both rational and irrational numbers.
What is the complex number set and what is included? what is the symbol?
Complex numbers (C) is the set of numbers (a+bi) in which a is real and b is imaginary. The complex numbers contain all of the other number sets.
Describe the relationship between the number sets.
C contains R which contains both I and Q. Q contains Z which contains W which contains N. I and Q do not contain any of the same numbers.
What are the two “strings” that show the relationship between the number sets
N contained in W Z Q R C and
I contained in R C
What is the commutative property of addition?
If “a” and “b” are real numbers, then a+b = b + a
What is the commutative property of multiplication?
If “a” and “b” are real numbers, then ab=ba
What is the commutative property of multiplication and addition?
The sum or product is not altered when the order of the numbers are interchanged or commuted.
What is th associative property of addition and multiplication?
The sum or the product is not altered when the grouping symbols are rearranged.
What is the associative property of addition?
If a, b, c are Real numbers then (a+b)+c = a+(b+c)
