Interior Lighting Applications Flashcards
accent lighting
Directional lighting to emphasize a particular object or surface feature, or to draw attention to a part of the field of view.
acceptance half-angle
The acceptance half-angle is set by the refractive indices of the core and cladding of fiber optics. It is expressed in terms of the numerical aperture (NA).The numerical aperture is given as:
NA = n0*sinθmax
where:
θmax is the greatest angle from the optical axis of a circular fiber where the external meridional plane ray will undergo total internal reflection within the fiber
n0 is the refractive index of the medium outside the fiber (for air, n0 = 1)
ace
In television, film and theater lighting: A 1000-W Fresnel spotlight.
air mass (optical air mass)
The ratio of the path length of solar radiation through the atmosphere to a given point, relative to the path length from sea level to the zenith.
altitude angle
The angular distance of a heavenly body measured from the horizon toward the zenith.
ambient lighting
Lighting throughout an area that produces general illumination.
analog multiplex, AMX
An industry standard control protocol for the transmission of dimming level or other data using an analog multiplexer.
annual sunlight exposure (ASE)
In daylighting: The fraction or percentage of the horizontal work plane that exceeds a specified direct sunlight illuminance level more than a specified number of hours per year over a specified daily schedule with all operable shading devices retracted.
arc
In television, film and theater lighting: A discharge light source, usually a carbon arc.
area lighting (television, film, theater)
The practice of lighting the acting space in separately controlled areas.
asbestos tapoff
see twofer - In television, film and theater lighting: A load connector wired in parallel to two line connectors so that two luminaires can be connected to a single electrical circuit.
automated fixture
In television, film and theater lighting: A lighting fixture whose color, movement, speed, beam size, beam pattern, or other attributes are controlled remotely from a control console.
azimuth
The angular distance between the vertical plane through a direction to a distant object or sky position, or the facing direction of a building façade, and a reference direction (typically North or South). (See also solar azimuth.)
baby
In television, film and theater lighting: Once a 250-watt to 300-watt planoconvex spotlight, with lens diameter of 10 to 13 cm (4 to 5 in.). Now usually a 500W- to 1000-W Fresnel spotlight with a lens diameter of 15 cm (6 in.), standard in the motion picture industry.
back light
In television, film and theater lighting: Illumination from behind (and usually above) a subject to produce a highlight along its edge and consequent separation between the subject and its background. Syn.: fringe light, halo light, contour light, hair light.
