Interim Acrylic RPD Flashcards
Second slides
What is a Removable Partial Denture (RPD)?
A dental prosthesis that substitutes missing teeth and associated structures in a partially edentulous arch, made from acrylic resin, and can be removed and replaced at will.
What is a Temporary RPD?
A removable prosthesis used for a short period until a more definitive prosthesis can be provided.
What are the objectives of an interim acrylic removable partial denture?
Reestablish aesthetics, maintain space, improve patient tolerance, reestablish occlusal relationships, condition teeth and ridge tissue, and serve as an interim restoration.
How does a temporary RPD help maintain space in young patients?
It prevents adjacent teeth from shifting until they mature enough to support fixed restorations.
Why is an interim RPD used to improve patient tolerance?
It allows the patient to gradually adapt to a permanent prosthesis.
How does a temporary RPD help in reestablishing occlusal relationships?
It can be used as an occlusal splint to establish a new occlusal relationship or occlusal vertical dimension.
What is tissue conditioning in the context of RPDs?
A procedure that prepares the gums for dentures by applying a soft material to relieve soreness and promote healing.
List three common indications for a temporary RPD.
Young patients, elderly patients with health concerns, and cost-sensitive patients who cannot afford metallic RPDs or fixed restorations.
What is a diagnostic RPD used for?
Young patients, elderly patients with health concerns, and cost-sensitive patients who cannot afford metallic RPDs or fixed restorations.
What is a diagnostic RPD used for?
It serves as a template before a definitive restoration is made
How can a treatment RPD assist after oral surgery
It can carry tissue treatment materials, reestablish occlusal vertical dimension, and act as a splint
What are the advantages of acrylic RPDs over cobalt chrome RPDs?
They are lightweight, have good aesthetics, are low-cost, easy to construct and repair, and require less clinical and laboratory time.
What are the disadvantages of acrylic RPDs compared to cobalt chrome RPDs?
Poor thermal conductivity, lower strength (easily broken), less hygienic, and tendency to warp if overheated during polishing.
What are the four main types of temporary RPDs?
Interim RPD, Transitional RPD, Treatment RPD, and Immediate RPD.
When is an Interim RPD used?
It is used temporarily to enhance aesthetics, function, occlusal support, and stabilization.
What is a Transitional RPD
A partial denture used when teeth need to be extracted gradually and not all at once.
What is the purpose of a Treatment RPD?
To improve tissue conditions before making a definitive prosthesis.
What is an Immediate RPD
A denture made before tooth extractions and inserted immediately after extractions.
What are the key components of an acrylic removable partial denture?
Major connector, minor connector, acrylic resin denture base, acrylic teeth, rests, and clasps.
What are the three main functions of the major connector?
Unification, stress distribution, and cross-arch stabilization.
What are the functions of minor connectors?
Unification, stress transfer, effect transmission, and support.
What role does the denture base play in an RPD?
Supports artificial teeth, transfers occlusal forces, stimulates tissue, prevents tooth migration, and improves aesthetics.
What are the functions of clasps in an RPD?
Provide retention, reciprocation, bracing, and stability.
List three important steps in RPD fabrication.
Diagnostic impressions, bite registration, and setting of teeth.
What is flasking in RPD fabrication
The process of enclosing the denture in a flask to mold and process the acrylic material.
