Epidermis
Outer layer of skin which serves as a physical and chemical barrier
Dermis
Provides the epidermis with nutrients and support. Important layer of skin as it contains blood vessels, hair, follicles, lymph vessels and sweat
Hypodermis/subcutaneous
Below the dermis which contains fat (adipose tissue) and helps with thermorégulation
Sensory receptors
Nerve ending that sends signals to the central nervous system when stimulated
Thermoreceptors
A sensory end organ that is stimulated by heat or cold
Arrector pilli muscles
Attaches to the base of hair follicles. Is used to generate heat the muscles contract all at once making hairs to stand
Blood vessels
A tubular structure carrying blood through the tissues and organs : A vien, artery, capillary
Hair
Composed of columns of dead keratinised epidermal cells
Nails
Protects against trauma
Langerhans cells
A cell in the epidermis that antigens bind to avoid antigens entering the skin
Vitamin D synthesis
Enzymes within the liver which is a vital compound in calcium regulation within the body
Sebaceous glands
Secretes sebum an oily substance to help provide a waterproof layer to skin
Sudoriferous gland
Known as swear glands
Ceruminous glands
Produces a waxy secretion which is situated in external auditory canal
