What is an Interest Group?
A group of people with common views, who work together to influence what the government does about those things they have in common.
What is the GOAL of a Lobbyist?
A Lobbyist works for interest groups to get elected officials to pass policies that will be good for their group.
What do the Lobbyist PROVIDE?
- Provide Public Information
- Provide Data and Statistics to support that cause
- Find experts to testify in favor of laws
What is the GOAL of PAC’s?
A part of interest group that USES MONEY from interest groups membership fees and donations to educate lawmakers and to support political candidates that support their groups’ policy choices.
Where does most of the PCA money go?
Most of the money goes to Incumbents (Those in office and running for re-election)
Economic Interest Group:
Establish Standards, Better working conditions
- Determine how people earn a living
- Business and professional labor, and agricultural
-NAM, AFL-CIO,AMA, ABA
Social Action Interest Groups:
Membership is determined by birth
(Gender, race, ethnicity, age)
NOW (National organization for women)
NAACP (Colored)
Single Issue Groups:
Focus on ONE Policy area
- MADD (Mothers against drinking)
- NRA (National Rifle Association)
Religious Interest Groups:
Support or Oppose Laws Morally
- U.S. Catholic Conference
- Christian Coalition
Public Interest Groups:
Environment, voter, registration, consumer protectionism, Historic Preservation
- Common Cause
- Sierra Club
