Interest Group
A collection of people or organizations that tries to influence public policy.
An Interest group works together to get their ideas to the public.
American Anti-Slavery Society
A major interest group, founded in 1833, to advocate for the abolition of the institution of slavery throughout the United States.
The American Anti-Slavery Society worked to abolish slavery.
Women´s Christian Temperance Union
A public interest group created in 1874 with the goal of outlawing the sale of liquor. Its activities included prayer groups, protest marches, lobbying, and the destruction of saloons
The Women´s Christian Temperance Union fought the sale of liquor because they did not like how their husbands acted when they were drunk.
The Grange
Founded in 1867 as an educational organization for farmers, The Grange evolved into the first truly national interest group by working to protect the political and economic concerns of framing communities and rural areas.
The Grange was formed to regulate railroads and the grain warehouses.
Lobbyist
Interest group representative who seeks to influence legislation that will benefit his or her organization or client through political and/or financial persuasion.
Lobbyist job is to persuade others to agree with their ideas.
Progressive Movement
A broad group of a political and social activist from the 1890s to the 1920s who opposed corruption in government supported regulation of monopolies, and sought improvement of socioeconomic conditions.
The progressive movement was started because their was a large amount of corruption in the United States during this time.
Public Interest Group
An organization that seeks to collective good that if achieved will not selectively and materially benefit group members.
Katy is trying decide if she should join a public interest group or just a regular interest group
American Federation of Labor
Founded on 1886, the AFL brought skilled workers from several trades together into one stronger national organization for the first time. It merged in 1955 with the Congress of industrial Organization to form the AFL-CIO.
My cousin Tom was able to get a job because of the American Federation of Labor.
National Association of Manufacturers
An Organization founded in 1895 by manufactures to combat the growth of organized labor
My Uncle Mark joined the National Association Of Manufacturers when he was a teenager.
U.S. Chamber of Commerce
A major pro-business lobbying group founded in 1912.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce was created by president Taft.
Trade Association
A group that represents a specific industry.
The trade association is run by the business for the specific industry.
Jerry Falwell
A southern baptist minister who, in 1978, founded the conservative religious interest group the Moral Majority.
Jerry Falwell and the Moral Majority helped Ronald Reagan become president in 1980.
Moral Majority
A conservative religious interest group credited with helping to mobilize conservative Evangelical Christian voters from its founding in 1978 through the presidency of Ronald Reagan
The Moral Majority was started by a baptist minister named Jerry Falwell in 1978.
Pat Robertson
A Southern Baptist minister and television evangelist who ran for president in 1988 and in 1989 founded the Conservative religious group in Christian Coalition.
