What are interest groups?
Interest groups are regarded as having important implications for a modern democracy, citizens can participate through them in the political process between elections.
They can also use the membership of all three groups to pressurise all three branches of government. They seek to influence those in government.
Sectional groups
These are groups that seek to represent their own section or group within society
Business/trade groups
Labour unions
Professional groups
Intergovernmental groups
Casual groups
These groups instead campaign for a particular issue or cause.
Single interest groups
Ideological groups
Policy groups
Think tanks
Single interest groups
These are those that have one overiding goal in society, such as the National Rifle Accosiation or the Susan b Anthony list.
Policy groups
These are those that are concerened with furtherinh a range of policies in one area.
For example the Sierra club
Professional groups
These are those formed to protect people in groups within society such as the ABA and the National Association of realtors
