Interdependence - Key Questions Flashcards
What is an organism?
A living thing
What is a predator?
An animal that hunts and eats another animal to survive
What is a prey?
An animal that is hunted by another animal
What do we call the plants at the bottom of a food
chain/web?
Producers
Which way to the arrow in a food chain point, and
why?
TOWARDS the animal that is consuming (eating), because they
show the direction energy is moving.
What do plants compete (fight) with each other for?
Nutrients (food), Space, Light, Water
What do animals compete (fight) with each other
for?
Food, Territory (space), Mates
What is pollination?
When pollen is moved from one plant to another to fertilise it
- normally by bees, insects or the wind.
What does biodiversity mean?
The variety of life forms on Earth
Why is biodiversity important?
The more varied Earth is, the better it can cope when things
change e.g. If one species (type) of frog goes extinct there will
still be lots of other species for its predators to eat.
What is a habitat?
The natural home of an animal, plant or other organisms
CHALLENGE:
֍How is energy lost as one organism is eaten by
another?
- When animals use some of the energy to move or keep
themselves warm - When organisms use some of the energy to grow
- Some parts of the organism are not eaten by the next animal
(the energy in them is lost)
CHALLENGE:
֍What can cause extinction to happen?
Climate changes, Natural disasters (volcanoes, tsunamis etc),
New diseases, New predators, New competitors, Hunting
Pollution, Destroying habitats
