WHAT IS INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION?
When people of different cultural identity and background interact and communicate with one another and this communication is influenced by their ethnicity, religion , gender, age and social status- we refer it as intercultural communication.
WHEN DOES THIS TYPE OF COMMUNICATION TAKES PLACE?
When people use their cultural identity to better understand the values, attitudes, dialects/ languages and human behavior and experiences. This type of communication is often accompanied gestures, facial expressions and body movements.
WHY IS INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION IMPORTANT?
Because modern communication and transportation networks bring businesses, organizations and individuals in contact with a large diversity of people from all over the world.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF DIVERSITY IN THE WORKPLACE?
Gives company freedom to go after the most talented people, regardless of differences.
INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION IS POSSIBLE IN TWO WAYS. WE MAY COMMUNICATE THROUGH
VERBAL COMMUNICATION -WHICH USES WORDS AND SENTENCES TO CONVENE OUR MESSAGE TO OTHERS.
NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION- IS WORDLESS. IT USES BODY LANGUAGE, GESTURES, FACIAL EXPRESSION AND EVEN EYE CONTACT TO COMMUNICATE WITH OTHERS
What is DMIS
DEVELOPMENTAL MODEL OF INTERCULTURAL SENSITIVITY (DMIS). BENNETT (1986, 1993)
THIS MODEL IS USED TO EXPLAIN HOW PEOPLE REACT TO CULTURAL DIFFERENCES AND IT IS COMPOSED OF SIX (6) STAGES.

TIPS TO FOLLOW WHEN HAVING CONVERSATION WITH SOMEONE TO AVOID BEING UNFAIR OR BIAS.
- DO NOT GENERALIZE IDEAS ABOUT A CERTAIN GROUP.
- DO NOT TALK TO YOUNG PEOPLE AND ELDERLY
- SHOW SENSITIVITY ON THE RELIGIOUS PRACTICES OF OTHER CULTURAL GROUP.
- ALWAYS BE POLITE. NEVER LOOK DOWN ON
