Q
Organisations of intercostal muscles
A
- Skin
- Superficial fascia
- Deep fascia
- External IC muscle
- Internal IC muscle

2
Q
Intercostal membrane
A
External and internal intercostal muscles do not occupy the entire length of the intercostal space.
They become aponeurotic at one end
3
Q
Transverse thoracis muscle
A
Innermost IC muscles only fill central half of IC space
- Fill remainder of space anteriorly
4
Q
Subcostalis muscle
A
Innermost IC muscles only fill central half of IC space
- Fill remainder of space posteriorly
5
Q
Intercostal muscle functions
A
- Contribute to respiratory movements of chest wall
- Assist in preventing the lungs and pleura from ballooning out between the ribs during respiratory movements
6
Q
Neurovascular bundle position
A
In costal groove of the rib between the internal and innermost intercostal muscles
