Interactions Of Waves Flashcards
Reflection
When an object or wave hits a surface through which it cannot pass, it bounces back
The law of reflection
The angle of incidence(coming wave) equals the angle of reflection
Rarefraction
The bending of waves due to change in speed
Diffraction
When a wave moves around a barrier through an opening in the barrier it bends and spreads out
Interference
The interaction of waves when they meet
Constructive interference
The interface that occurs when waves combine to make a wave with a bigger amplitude
Destructive interference
The interface that occurs when two waves combine to make a wave with a smaller amplitude
Standing wave
A wave that appears to stand in one place, even though it is really two waves interfering as they pass through each other
Node
Points of zero amplitude in a standing wave
Antinodes
Points of max amplitude on a standing wave. Points of min energy
Natural frequency
Once you get it going you only need one push to keep it going
Resonance
An increase in the amplitude of a vibrato that occurs when external vibrations match an objects natural frequency
