interactions between organisms - competition Flashcards
1
Q
intraspecific competition
A
occurs when individuals of the SAME species compete with one another for resources
e.g. food, water, breeding, habitats, light and so on
2
Q
interspecific competition
A
occurs when individuals of DIFFERENT species compete with one another for resources
e.g. food, water, breeding, habitats, lights and so on
3
Q
what determines the size of a population
A
- the availability of resources
- the greater the availability of resources, the larger the population
- the lower the availability of resources, the smaller the population
4
Q
interspecific competition and niche
A
- where a population of two species occupy the same niche
- one will normally have a competitive advantage over the other
- the population of that species increases, whilst of the other species decreases
5
Q
competitive exclusion principle
A
when conditions remain the same, competitive advantage of one species will lead to the complete removal of the other species
6
Q
what does the competitive exclusion principle state
A
- no two species can occupy the same niche indefinitely when resources are limited
7
Q
how to show a factor influences the size of a population
A
- it can be necessary to link the factor to the birth rate and death rate of individuals in the population
