Interactions Flashcards
Interactions between organisms in an environment may be beneficial or harmful. There are three main types of interactions:
Competition
Predation
Symbiosis
Two types of competition
Inter-specific competition
Intra-specific
What is inter-specific competition?
a struggle between organisms of DIFFERENT species for the same supply of food, water, space, nest sites or any other environmental resource that is in limited supply
What is intra-specific competition?
competition for resources (food, water, space, nest sites or any other environmental resource that is in limited supply) or mates between members of the SAME species
What is predation?
“Killing living animals for food”
- when plants are the food source we refer to it as grazing, not predation
What is the littoral zone?
Shallow water close to the shore (include the tidal area between low and high water mark)
What is symbiosis?
a relationship where two quite different organisms live and function together in a close association, to the benefit of at least one of them
What are the three types of symbiotic relationships?
Mutualism
Commensalism
Parasitism
What is mutualism?
an association between two different kinds of organisms where BOTH of them BENEFIT
Neither organism would survive on its own in the habitat
What is commensalism?
An association between two organisms where ONE organism (the symbiont) BENEFITS and the HOST IS UNAFFECTED by the association
both organisms can survive without eachother
What is parasitism?
an association between two organisms where “one organism (the parasite) benefits and the HOST IS HARMED.
