interactionist approach to explaining SZ Flashcards
strengths of the interactionist approach in explaining SZ
was a limited model at first but the modern model has evolved and is more holistic and thorough taking into account childhood trauma etc. this may make the explanation more valid than others. it also has practical applications in the form of effective combined treatment models.

research support
Houston et al. childhood sexual abuse is major as an influence with cannabis use being the trigger as 543/5877 reported sexual trauma and 643/5877 reported cannabis use before the age of 16 supporting the diathesis stress model. However validity can be questioned as some people may have no recollection of trauma.
supporting research from Tarrier and Gottesman.
weakness of the interactionist approach explaining SZ
unclear
the fundamental mechanisms about how stress can trigger biological responses is still unclear. Many complex factors are involved in this response which can be hard to gauge empirically. Therefore there is a lack of clarity in the explanation.

Jarvis and Okami
Jarvis and Okami suggest a treatment fallacy in that a successful treatments doesn’t identify the cause- alcohol reduces shyness but we cannot conclude the cause of shyness is a lack of alcohol. just because there seems to be a connection/ correlation this doesn’t equate to the cause.
