Interactionist Approach Flashcards
Diathesis stress model ORIGINAL
Suggest that One or more underlying factors make a person particularly vulnerable to developing schizophrenia but the onset of the condition is triggered by stress
In the original diathesis stress model meal suggested that diathesis was entirely genetic the result of a single Gene responsible for schizophrenia this led to the idea of a biologically based schizotypical personality
A characteristic of this is sensitivity to stress
According to me or if the person doesn’t have the schizo phrenic gene then no amount of stress would lead to schizophrenia
However in carriers of the Gene chronic stress through childhood and adolescence in particular the presence of a schizophregenic mother could result in the development of the disorder
DSM UPDATED
The modern understanding of diathesis is it is now clear that schizophrenia is poly genic and many of many of these genes increase genetic vulnerability Ripke found that there is no schizogene
Modern views of diathesis also include a range of factors beyond the genetic including psychological trauma - trauma becomes the diathesis rather than the stressor
READ suggested that early experiences of trauma especially exposure to domestic violence and abuse affect many aspects of brain development
For example hypothalamic pituitary adrenal system can become overactive making a person far more vulnerable to later stress.
Stress is now referred to as anything that can trigger schizophrenia such as cannabis use
This is because cannabis interferes with the dopamine system. Most people don’t develop schizophrenia after smoking cannabis because they don’t have the predisposition.
