What is the Diathesis-Stress model?
A model of schizophrenia is which sees that schizophrenia is developed through a combination of biological (diathesis) and environmental (stress) influences.
Twin study evaluation points
(-) Twins separated (adopted into separate households) at birth both still develop schizophrenia showing environment is not always necessary
(+) Grottesman showed that if one identical twin had schizophrenia then there was a 49% chance that the other twin will develop the disorder
Family therapy evaluation points
(+) varese (2012) found that children who experienced severe trauma before the age of 16 were 3x more likely to develop schizophrenia
(-) Family therapy can make parent/family members feel responsible for a child’s illness
