A
- labelling can cause a master status where the person becomes attached to the label and behaviours associated with it
- behaviour only becomes deviant when labelled

A
when someone is continually labelled they begin to take on this label and live up to it

what does becker say about a deviant career
A
may start if someone joins a deviant subculture or group that supports them and the deviant identity affects the persons choices and lifestyle

A
- study of the south pacific islands where incest between cousins was deviant but very common and everyone tuned a blind eye to it
- but when one man was accused of incest in front of his community is caused uproar and the man committed suicide

what are criticisms of interactionism
A
- only explains minor crimes not others such as rape and murder
- some people work hard to get rid of the label
- ignores the victim
- doesn’t explain why crime/deviance happens in the first place
