interactionism Flashcards
what is labelling theory?
no act is deviant or criminal in itself and only becomes it when we label it that
differential enforcement of law
social control agencies e.g police label certain groups as criminals
means law is enforced on this group more than others
Cicourel findings
police use typifications of ‘typical delinquent’
w/c ethnic minorities more likely to fit these typifications so get stopped, arrested and charged more
what does labelling cause
self fulfilling prophecy
what do interactionists use to explain how trying to control deviance causes more deviance
deviance amplification spiral
Jock Young study
deviance amplification spiral
Hippies and cannabis
drugs initially not central focus to hippies but after increased police attention they were labelled and drugs became a central focus
intercationism and crime stats
reject stats compiled from police
stats measure what police do instead of what criminals do
e.g police label people so look for these people committing crimes more (increases stats on w/c males)
stats are social construction not a true measure of crime
