What is creative intelligence?
Inventing or imagining new solutions to problems // creative ways to open a jar
What is analytical intelligence?
Academic problem solving // being asked to solve a math problem on the board (one solution)
What is practical intelligence?
Street smarts & common sense // Knowing to drive on the right side of the road, how to brake, and when to go.
What is savant syndrome?
Limited mental ability but has amazing specific skills // Memorizing a song after hearing it once.
What is emotional intelligence?
Ability to use my senses, express, understand, and control emotions // Turning criticism into motivation
Who was Alfred Binet? What did he do?
What is mental age?
Chronological age is typical for that performance level // A 4-year-old child does well as the average 8-year-old then the child’s mental age is 8.
What was the Standford-Binet intelligence scale?
(Terman) If you didn’t make the right score on the IQ test shouldn’t be allowed to produce // tests that are culturally based (first the test was on french now it’s on Americans)
What is the intelligence Quotient (IQ)?
Mental Age divided by Chronological Age multiplied by 100 // (12/10)X100=120
What does an amplitude test measure?
Predicts your ability to learn new skills // Placement tests or college entrance exams (think about how you got into COMP+workshop)
What do achievement tests measure?
What a person has learned // Final exams is what you learned in class
What is the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) measure?
Most used intelligence scale // 5-A-2-B = AB25
What is reliability?
similar results when you retake the test (Consistency) // IQ test score on week 1 is 100, take the same test again next week and get 100
What is validity?
The test measures or predicts what it’s supposed to (Accuracy) // a test of intelligence should measure intelligence not something else like memory.
What is standardization?
Comparing scores to a pretested norm group
What is a normal curve?
Shows the distribution of scores on many physical & psychological attributes // Intelligence
What is intellectual disability?
Limited mental ability 70 and below and difficulty adapting to the demands of life.
What is crystallized intelligence?
Accumulated knowledge & verbal skills. Knowledge grows really slowly over time. Tends to increase with age. // Crystals take a while to form.
What is fluid intelligence?
Ability to reason quickly and abstractly decreases with age. // Think on the spot
What are genetic influences?
The same genes share comparable mental abilities.
What is early stimulation?
Children from environments that lack stimulation benefit from responsive caregiving and interaction // Simple activities (reading and singing with kids)
