The Monroe Doctrine
A
- Created in 1823 by President James Monroe during his 7th state of the Union Document
- 3 key foreign policies
“…the American continents are henceforth not to be considered as subjects for future colonization by any European powers.”
“… any attempt on their [Europe’s] part to extend their system to any portion of this hemisphere [will be considered] as dangerous to our peace and safety.”
“With the existing colonies… of any European power… we… shall not interfere.”

No.
- The Navy and Army weren’t strong enough
- It was, however, enforced by Great Britain (This is the early stages of the “special relationship”)

A
- US wanted to preserve the status quo in the Western Hemisphere (AKA the Americas)
- Responding to threats to the international status quo became a mainstay of US national security policy
They wanted to contain colonization
