Epithelial Membrane

Cutaneous Membrane
Technical term for skin.
Mucous Membrane
Inner lining of some organs and body cavities.
Serous Membrane
Outer lining of some organs and body cavities.
Serous Fluid
Yellow watery fluid found between organs and their membranes.
Pleura
Thin layer of tissue that covers lungs.
Peritoneum
The serous membrane that covers the abdominal cavity.
Pericardium
Fibrous sac that encloses heart and great vessels.
Synovial Membrane
Layer of tissue that lines cavity joints, tendon sheaths, and bursae.
Skin
Largest and primary organ. Covers entire external surface of the body.
Integument
Forms physical barrier between external and internal environment.
Keratin
A protein found in epithelial cells.
Epidermis
First barrier of protection from invasions on the body.
Dermis
A fibrous structure containing vasculature, nerve endings, hair follicles and glands.
Stratum Basale
Basal layer of the epidermis.
Stratum Granulosum
Thin layer of cells that lie above the stratum spinosum.
Stratum Spinosum
Between the stratum basale and the granulosum layers.
Stratum Lucidum
Thin clear layer of dead skin cells.
Stratum Corneum
Outermost layer of the epidermis.
Sebum
Oily substance that protects skin from drying out.
Melanin
Substance that produces hair, eye and skin pigment.
Boils and Carbuncles
Puss filled bumps.
Sebaceous Glands
Glands found in hair follicles that secrete sebum.
Eccrine Glands
Type of sweat gland that is found in all regions of the skin.
