- Definition: General term for dry skin
- Components: Xero (dry), derma (skin)
- Significance: Applies to any type of dry skin condition
Eczema

- Definition: Severe form of dermatitis (skin inflammation)
- Causes: Autoimmune response or allergic reaction
Psoriasis (Plaque Psoriasis)

- Definition: Autoimmune condition causing dry, itchy patches
- Triggers: Illness, stress
- Management: Prescription medications; no complete cure
Cellulitis

- Definition: Inflammation of the dermis caused by bacterial infection
- Risks: Without antibiotic treatment, can become life-threatening
Alopecia

- Causes: Male pattern baldness (genetic), illness, stress, mechanical stress, autoimmune disorders
Onychomycosis

- Definition: Fungal infection of fingernails or toenails
- Characteristics: Thick, brittle, yellowish nails
- Treatment: Prescription or over-the-counter preparations
Nevus

- Birthmark or Mole
- Monitoring: No worry unless appearance changes
- Tip: Use pictures for comparison over time
Acne

- Sebaceous Glands Infection
- Cause: Excessive oil production, bacterial breeding
- Common and treatable
Impetigo

- Definition: Staph or strep infection, common in young children
- Characteristics: Highly contagious, red blisters in nose and upper lip
- Treatment: Antibiotics shorten infection duration
Laceration

- Depth: May require stitches or skin glue if deep into the dermis
Abrasion

- Examples: From a scraped knee to road burn from falling off a motorcycle
Lesion

- Examples: Bee sting lesions, measles spots
Urticaria

- Allergic Hives
- Causes: Allergen ingestion or skin contact
- Management: Wash contact area, avoid allergens
Ecchymosis

- Bruise
- Cause: Sudden pressure leading to blood vessel rupture
- Concern: Individuals on blood thinners need to avoid bruising
Burns: 1st Degree
Integumentary (Skin) System Complaints
- The epidermis is affected. This results in redness and soreness, but no blistering
Burns: 2nd Degree
Integumentary (Skin) System Complaints
- Involves both the epidermis and the dermis. The burn has gone into the layer of skin where we find blood vessels and nerves
- Blistering occurs and this type of burn is painful because nerves are damaged
Burns: 3rd Degree
Integumentary (Skin) System Complaints
- The epidermis, dermis, and fat layer have been damaged
- This type of burn is extremely serious and, although not as painful as a second degree burn because the nerves have been destroyed, a person can quickly go into shock

- Occurrence: Common in elderly, bedridden, or nursing home patients
- Risks: Infection, sepsis; requires good wound care

Dermabrasion
Procedures
- Definition: Chemical or mechanical removal of the epidermis
- Methods: Chemical peels, creams (chemical) or rough washcloth, laser (mechanical)
- Purpose: Removes imperfections by shedding the top layer of dead skin cells
Debridement
Procedures
- Definition: Removal of damaged tissue, dead tissue, or foreign objects from the skin
- Application: Common after third-degree burns to eliminate dead skin and tissue

- Definition: Surgical removal of a lump from the breast

- Types: Involves breast implants or breast reduction surgery
