Integumentary System Flashcards
What are the functions of the integumentary system?
1) It covers and protects underlying tissues and organs from impacts, abrasions, chemicals, and infections, and it prevents the loss of body fluids.
2) Maintains normal body temperature by regulating heat exchange with the environment
3) Synthesizes vitamin D3 in the epidermis, which aids calcium uptake and stores large reserves of lipids in the dermis
4) Detects touch, pressure, pain and temperature stimuli
5) Excretes salts, water and organic wastes
6) Coordination of the immune response to pathogens and skin cancers
Define inflammation
A process that isolates the injured area while damaged cells, tissue components, and any dangerous microorganisms, which could cause infection are cleaned up.
Define infection
The presence of pathogens constitutes an infection.
Define regeneration
the repair that occurs after the damaged tissue has been stabilized and the inflammation has subsided.
Define necrosis
The tissue destruction that takes place after cells have been damaged or killed.
Define abcess
Is an accumulation of pus in an enclosed tissue space
Define Pus
A collection of debris, fluid, dead and dying cells and necrotic tissue components.
Define Keratin
A tough fibrous protein that is also the basic structural component of hair and nails in humans.
Define Mucin
Goblet cells secrete mucin which mixes with water to form mucus. Glycoprotein secretions called mucins absorb water to form mucus, Mucus coats and lubricates the surfaces of the reproductive and digestive tracts.
Define Melanin
Melanocytes synthesize and store the brown pigment melanin, which gives tissues a dark color. There are two types of melanin a red-yellow type ( pheomelanin) and a brown-black type ( eumelanin)
define ground substance
Define dermatitis
Define cyanosis
Define Jaundice
Define Vitiligo
