Integumentary System Flashcards
What is the Integumentary System composed of?
It is composed of organs that form the external covering of the body and protect it from many threats.
Why do the specialized cells from our Integumentary System secrete melanin?
To protect the body from the carcinogenic effects of UV rays and cells that have an immune function
What are the parts of the Integumentary System
Hair, skin, nails, glands, nerves
What is the main function of the Integumentary System
It acts as a barrier to protect the body from the outside environment.
OR
It helps retain body fluids, protects against diseases, eliminates waste products, and regulated body temperature
For the Integumentary System to do its job, it needs to?
Work with all the other system in our body
What are the first line of defences of our body against pathogens
Integumentary System
Name the functions of the body parts of the Integumentary System in this order: Hair, nails, glands, nerves.
Hair - helps keep you warm
Nails - gives structure to the ends of our fingers
Glands - releases oils for moisture and protection
Nerves - sends and receives messages to the brain
Name all the functions of the Integumentary System
None - 1
1-2 - 2
3-4 - 3
5-6 - 4
7 - 5
- Protects the body’s internal living tissues and organs
- Protects the body against invasion from infectious organisms
- Protects the body from dehydration
- Protects the body against abrupt changes in temperature
- Helps in disposing waste materials
- Acts as receptor for touch, pressure, pain, heat, and cold
- Stores water and fat
Name all of the layers of the skin
Epidermis, dermis, hypo dermis
What is the Epidermis?
The epidermis is composed of epithelial cells that serve as the other layer of the skin.
What is the dermis?
The dermis is the layer directly below the epidermis. This layer is 15-40 times thicker than the epidermis
What is the dermis for?
Composed of connective tissues to prevent the skin from tearing and enable the skin to return to its normal state after being scratched
The outer layer of the epidermal cells secrete protein which is referred to as?
Keratin
What is the hypo dermis?
They layer beneath the dermis.
What is the hypo dermis for?
It composes connective tissues that store fats and helps the body in retaining heat
What are the two alternative names for the sweat glands
Sudoriferous and sudoriparous glands
What are sweat glands?
Sweat glands are small tubular structures of the skin that produces sweat
Where is the hair root located?
The hair root is located below the surface of the skin
What is the hair root?
The hair root is a part that interacts with many other associated structures within the dermis and hypo dermis layers of skin
What is the hair shaft
The hair shaft is the visible part of the hair that protrudes through the skin
What are the special cells that create skin color
Melanocytes
What do melanocytes also produce aside from skin color
Pigment, and melanin
Where can melanocytes be found
In the epidermis
