Integumentary system Flashcards
Epidermis
outermost layer of skin, keratinized stratified squamous epithelium.
Keratinocyte
produces keratin( protection)
melanocyte
synthesize pigment(melanin) found in deepset layer of epidermis
stratum corneum
superficial layer made of dead cells called Keratinocytes, contain Keratin. AKA: Horny layer
stratum lucidum
found only in soles of feet and palms
stratum granulosum
Cytoplasmic granules, contain keratin( an oily waterproofing substance) WATERPROOFING
Stratum Spinosum
Melanin found here, protects from UV light and decreases production of Vit D
Stratum Basale
deepest epidermal layer. single row of actively dividing cells
Dermis
Second layer of skin felxible connective tissue. two layers, the papillary and reticular layers
Dermal papillae
Finger like projections that contain Meissners corpuscles(touch receptors).Found in papillary layer
Pacinian (lamellated) corpuscle
Pressure Receptors. located in Retcular layer
Meissner’s (tactile) corpuscle
Touch receptors. Found in Dermal papillae
Hypodermis
Sweat Gland
Exocrine gland that secretes sweat
Sebaceous gland
exocrine gland that secretes Sebum(oil)
Hair follicle
Epithelial tissue lined sheath, surrounding hair bulb.
Arrector Pili Muscle
Smooth muscle attached to hair follicle , contractions cause hair to stand upright.
Langerhans cells (dendritic cells)
arise from bone marrow, migrate to epidermis. Ingest foreign substances activators of immune system.
Tactile(merkle) cells
Epidermis/dermis junction. Sensory receptor for touch
Papillary layer
Made of loose connective tissues that contains dermal papillae(touch receptors)
Reticular Layer
Composed of dense irregular collagenous connective tissue. Houses sweat glands, sebacous glands(oil) and Pacinian corpusles(Lamallated)
