Integumentary system Flashcards
epidermis
outermost portion of skin; composed of closely packed, dead, keratin-filled squamous cells. chief mechanical barrier protecting the body. composed of stratum corneum, stratum lucidum, stratum granulosum, and stratum germinativum
dermis
richly vascular connective tissue below epidermis. elastin, collagen, and reticular fibers provide resilience, strength, and stability, sensory nerve fibers indicate pain, touch, and temperature. autonomic motor nerves innervate blood vessels, glands, and arrector pili muscles.
hypodermis
subcutaneous layer consisting of loose connective tissue filled with adipose. Generates heat, provides insulation, shock absorption, and a reserve of calories.
