Integumentary Flashcards
What are the 2 main types of sweat glands (sudoriferous) and what are their purpose?
Eccrine primary function is to regulate temperature. Where as apocrine is at puberty
What is the differences between eccrine and apocrine glands?
Eccrine are smaller coiled tubular gland that secrete sweat on to the skin
though the pores. Apocrine glands are also coiled tubular glands that secrete into the canals of the hair follicles.
What is the secretion, location, and function of the sebaceous gland?
Secretes: Sebum(oil) location:everywhere but palms and soles function: keeps your skin and hair from drying and helps to inhibit growth of some bacteria.
What is secretion, location and function of the ceruminous gland?
It secretes ear wax, is located in the auditory ear canal, and it creates a sticker barrier and water proof the ear canal to prevent entrance of bacteria and fungi.
List the five cells fo the epidermis.
Keratinocytes, intraepidermal macrophage, melanocytes, stem cells, tactile cells. (KIM Sucks Titties)
What is the function or keratinocytes?
To synthesis keratin and makes up a majority of the epidermal cells. (Waterproofing)
What is the function of intraepidermal macrophage?
Immune cells that come from the bone marrow and detect pathogen and lets the immune system know of the intruder to attack.
What is the function of melanocytes?
Located in the stratum basale, synthesize melanin to protect against the sun.
What is the function of stem cells?
They are only in the deep layer of the skin and under go mitosis and are undifferentiated and produce keratinocytes.
What is the function of tactile cells?
They are receptors for touch. Ie
i.e. merkel cells
What is the differnece between the dermis and epidermis?
The epidermis has 4layer and 5 in thick and is made of stratified squamous epithelium and large protective function where as the dermis is deep to the epidermis and mainly collagen and elastic fiver provinding strength and elasticity.
What are striae?
Tears in the colleges fibres (ie stretch marks)
Cyanosis
Blueness of the skin from deficiency of oxygen in the blood
Albinism
Lack of melanin results in white hair and pink eyes
Hemoglobin
A red pigment adds to reddish hue of the skin.
