Integument Flashcards
Cutis plus tela subcutanea (or hypodermis) equals?
Integument
Epidermis plus dermis equals?
Cutis
What does the cotton undershirt represent?
Adipose tissue-hypodermis
What does the nylon shirt represent?
Dense irregular connective tissue-dermis
What does the wool sweater represent?
Stratified squamous epithelial-epidermis
What types of tissue is in the epidermis? Is it vascular or avascular?
Stratified squamous
Avascular
What layers are in the epidermis? (5) describe them.
Stratum basale-bottom layer of epidermis
Stratum spinosum- binds together
Stratum granulosum- discharges lips to create a waterproof surface
Stratum lucidum-not a focus
Stratum corneum- protects from friction and abrasions. Sheds dead cells
What type of tissue is in the dermis? 3 facts about it
Dense irregular
1) primary layer
2) vascular
3) gives strength
Dermal papilla 2 facts and the 4 functions
Finger like projections into the epidermis
Nerve and blood vessels found here
1) increases surface area which allows blood flow
2) anchoring epidermis to dermis
3) increases sensitivity because of nerve supply
4) arrangement that gives us our fingerprint
Stratum reticulare. Structure(2) and function(3)
S- bundles of collagen fibers, dense irregular connective tissue
F- strength and structural integrity (patterns)
Cleavage lines
Not likely to scar if you cut with the pattern
Type of tissue in subcaneous layer or hypodermis. And the function of that tissue?
Adipose tissue
1) allows movement
2) cushions
3) insulation
4) stores energy
Fatty layer
Adipose cells
Fibrous layer(2)
Increase of collagen fibers
Structure base for the tissue
Invagination (2)
Inward growth of epidermis
Development of hair follicles and glands of the skin
What is a follicle?
Epidermal invagination
Produces the hair
What causes the hair to stand up? How..?
Arrector pili muscles
A nervous system response
What does exocrine mean?
Excrete out
Whats the anatomy of the exocrine gland?(2) Describe them.
Glandular body- simple cuboidal, cells produce secretion
Transport duct- connects to epithelial surface and carries secretion to the surface
What type of glands are there? (3)Describe them.
Sebaceous gland- relationship to hair follicle, oily waterproofs the skin of the follicle.
Eccrine sweat gland- produce watery clear oily fluid most numerous
Apocrine sweat gland- stinky least numerous but largest
