Integument Flashcards
What is a somite?
The embryological precursor to a dermatome/area of mesoderm tissue
what is a dermatome?
an area of the dermis which is innervated by the same nerve.
What is the clinical relevance of dermatomes?
We can use this is to provide effective local anaesthetic i.e. line blocks in cattle
What nerve is blocked during the process of cattle dehorning?
the cornual nerve
What are the three kinds of receptors found in the epidermis/dermis?
Mechanoreceptors, Nociceptors, Thermoreceptors
What do each of these mechanoreceptors detect:
1- Pacinian corpuscle
2- Meissners corpuscle
3- Merkels disc
4- Ruffini’s ending
1- fast vibrations
2- texture change
3- sustained pressure
4- skin stretch
What are two examples of thermoreceptors?
Free nerve endings & Krause endings
What are nociceptors?
Free nerve endings to detect pain
What part of the CNS regulates homeostasis?
Hypopthalamus
What occurs to drive the positive feedback loop in a fever
The set point of the hypothalamus resets to a higher value, allowing the body temperature to rise higher
What structure aids the function of tactile hairs as receptors
The venous sinus
how does the venous sinus enhance the signals recieved from tactile hairs
The blood ripples in response to hair motion, creating a larger mechanical signal that is transmitted by the nerves
What is an area of skin that is supplied by one spinal nerve called?
An autonomous zone
What are we able to achieve via the use of autonomous zones
Local anaesthetic and diagnosis of peripheral nerve damage
What is the process by which the early CNS is formed
Neurulation
