gene-environment interaction
- the environment may be reposible for activating certain genes
diathesis-stress model
individuals inherit multiple genes that determine tendencies (vulnerabilities) to express certain traits or behaviours
ex. developing alcohol use disorder in the face of university stress
learned helplessness
-occurs when someone encounters a stressful situation repeatedly, over which they have no control
- ex. a person may feel depressed when faced with a stressful situation because they believe that they have no control over it
modelling/observational learning
learning to mimic or not mimic someone else’s behaviour due to their perceived consequences
prepared learning
we are genetically prone to developing a fear of objects or situations that are threats to our ancestors
CBT
aims to alter cognitive distortions/ maladaptive thoughts, attitudes, and beliefs.. and promote healthy coping mechanisms
