integration of metabolism Flashcards
what is happening in the fed state?
- hepatic portal vein transports nutrients from the liver to tissues
- glycogen stores are created, nutrients are distributed
what processes occur in the liver during the fed state?
- increased phosphorylation of glucose
- increased glycogen synthesis
- increased pathway of the pentose phosphate pathway
- increased rate of glycolysis
- increased fatty acid synthesis
what occurs in the adipose in the fed state?
- increased glucose uptake
- increased rate of glycolysis
- increased activity of PPP
- increased supply of chylomicrons
- increased TAG synthesis
what is the fasted state?
catabolic state that begins if no further fuel is ingested after the fed state. involves the use of fuel reserves
what is the regulatory molecule of the fasted and fed states?
fasted - glucagon
fed - insulin
what occurs in the liver in the fasted state?
- increased rate of glycogen degradation
- increased rate of gluconeogenesis
- increased rate of fatty acid oxidation
- production of ketone bodies
what occurs in the adipose tissue in the fasted state?
- increased degradation of TAGs
- increased release of fatty acids
what are the complications of type I diabetes?
- hyperglycaemia
- ketoacidosis
- hypertriacylglycerolaemia
why is blood glucose high in type I diabetes?
the body thinks its in a fasted state due to the absence of insulin, so it makes glucose via gluconeogenesis, leaving extra glucose in the blood
