Integration of Metabolism Flashcards
What are the three fuel storages of the heart?
Fatty Acids
Lactate
Ketone Bodies
What percentage of the total body weight is brain and nervous tissue?
2%
What is adipose tissue?
Long term storage site for fatty acids in the form of triglycerides
What are carbohydrates broken down into?
Simple sugars
What happens to pyruvate before it becomes acetyl CoA?
It is reduced and decarboxylated
Where in the body can excess G6P be used to generate glycogen?
Liver and muscle
What can excess acetyl CoA be used to generate?
Fatty acids
What and where are fatty acids stored?
They are stored as triglycerides in adipose tissue
What is produced during extreme exercise?
Lactic acid
What is the brain largely dependent on as a metabolic fuel?
Glucose
What is the definition of hypoglycaemia?
Plasma glucose level falling below 3mM
List 3 ways the body can avoid hypoglycaemia?
- Breakdown of liver glycogen stores occurs to maintain plasma glucose levels
- Release free FAs from adipose tissue
- Convert acetyl CoA into ketone bodies via the liver
What is the overall aim of gluconeogenesis?
To generate glucose from pyruvate
What is the Cori cycle?
When lactate is taken up by the liver and utilised to regenerate pyruvate by Lactate Dehydrogenase
What are the products of triglyceride hydrolysis?
FAs and glycerol
