Dental types of treatment
Diagnostic and preventive—routine exams and x-rays, regular cleanings, fluoride treatments;
■ Restorative—repairing or restoring teeth that have been damaged, usually by tooth decay
■ Oral surgery—surgery performed in the oral cavity
■ Endodontics—treatment of the pulp (the soft tissue substance located in the center of each
tooth)
■ Periodontics—treatment of the supporting structures of the teeth—that is, the gums
■ Prosthodontics—artificial replacements, such as bridges and dental implants
■ Orthodontics—correction of irregular alignment of the teeth
Features of Dental Insurance
Any provider versus PPO
■ Scheduled versus non-scheduled benefits
■ Diagnostic and preventative—usually covered 100%
■ Basic services—fillings, crowns, anesthesia—coinsurance usually 80/20—subject to annual limit
■ Major services—root canals, oral surgery, gum treatment etc. Coinsurance usually 50/50 subject
to annual limit
■ Predetermination of benefits often required
Group Dental
Usually a separate policy
■ May be integrated with medical coverage—one deductible for both
Adverse Selection
Probationary periods
■ Limitations on benefits for late enrollees
■ Reduced benefit limits during the first year of coverage
