Insulin Flashcards
What is insulin?
is a low molecular weight protein produced and stored by the beta cells of the pancreas. Aims to conserve fuel by facilitating uptake and storage of glucose, amino acids and fats after a meal
How does insulin facilitate glucose?
increase the uptake of glucose by tissues. increases liver glycogen. decreases glycogen breakdown. increases synthesis of fatty acids. inhibits breakdown of fatty acids into ketone bodies. promotes incorporation of amino acids into protein. If insulin is deficient then the release of stored glycogen and fat for energy production.
What are the types of insulin?
Ultra-short acting, short acting, intermediate acting, long acting
What are the types of insulin devices?
insulin vials, penfills, insulin pump, flexpen, innolets
What are the side effects of insulin?
hypoglycaemia, weight gain, reactions at the injection site or lipodystrophy
Drugs that increase blood glucose?
corticosteroids, adrenaline, beta-20agonists, anti-psychotics
Drugs that decrease blood glucose?
alcohol, aspirin, trimethoprim
The choice of regimen depends on…
patient, lifestyle and preferred lifestyle
