Instruments used in operative dentistry Flashcards
what are hand instruments used for?
cut , plane , or cleave tooth structure during the preparation of a cavity to receive a restoration or other treatment
what’s the purpose of an instrument formula ?
describe the dimensions and angulation of the instrument
bin angled instrument =how many angles ?
2
what’s the point of having a contra-angled instrument ?
bring the working end of the instrument within 1-2mm of the long ais of the handle for better balance
number of angles in the shank depends on :
functional orientation and length of the blade
for non-cutting instruments , the working part is termed:
Nib —> working surface of the nib is called the face
explain the 3 number formula :
1st number is the width of the blade in tenths of a millimeter
2nd number is the length of the blade in millimeters
there third number is the angle of the blade with the long axis of the tooth
explain the four number formula of instruments :
first number : width of the blade in mm
second number :angle of cutting edge with handle in degree centigrade (usually 90 is this number isn’t specified –>3 number formula )
third number indicated the length of the blade
fourth number indicates the angle that the blade makes with the handle
what are the functions of a chisel ?
planning of enamel which has been undermined by carious dentin / removal of dentin
what’s the function of an excavator ?
removal of soft carious dentin / shaping of the internal cavity walls
difference between direct and lateral cutting instruments?
direct :
-force is applied in the same plane as that of the blade and handle
-straight blade( single plane)
-all angles in the shank are in the same plane as th handle
-used in direct and lateral cutting
+=no angle of less than 12 degree
lateral cutting :
-force is applies at right angle to the plane of the blade and handle
-curved blade (double plane )
-angles or curves are in a plane at right angle to the plane of the handle
-can only be used in lateral cutting (scrapping )
mesial bevel:
distal bevel:
mesial bevel : push
distal bevel : pull
which instrument is used to flatten the pulpal floor?
tripple angle chisel
instrument used cleave or split undermined enamel:
straight chisel
monoangle chisel (mesial/distal)
bin-angled chisel (mesial/distal)
modified straight chisel with slight (5 degree) curvature starting from shank up to the cutting edge without and angulations
wedel steadt chisel (medial/distal)
