Carbon steel hand cutting instruments description
rusts easy, maintains sharp edge longer, cutting edge can break easily if sharpened improperly

Shank

What part do you use to hold the hand instrument?
Handle/Shaft
What is Instrument Balance?
allows concentration of force at the blade, prevents instrument from rotating in the fingers
How is Instrument Balance achieved?
by designing the angles of the shank so cutting edge is within 2mm of long axis of the handle (otherwise the instrument will rotate)

Order, Suborder, Class, Subclass
What is Order?
purpose of the instrument (eg. excavator)
What is Suborder?
position/manner of use (eg. push/pull)
What is Class?
form of the working end (eg. hatchet)
What is Subclass?
angles of the shank (eg. bin-angle, mon-angle)
