Instruments Flashcards
Which grain is the strongest?
The warp.
What is the WARP?
The thread going in the same direction as the selvedges.
It is the strongest thread.
It has the least amount of stretch.
Which grain has the least amount of stretch?
The warp.
Which grain runs parallel to (or in the same direction as) the selvedges?
The warp?
What is the WEFT?
The weft yarns weave over and under the warp yarns.
The is more ‘give’ in the weft grain.
Which grain has more ‘give’ - weft or warp?
The Weft.
Which yarns weave under and over the warp yarns?
The Weft yarns.
Which grain runs across the fabric from one selvedge to the other selvedge?
The Weft.
What is the BIAS?
The diagonal grain of the fabric. This is the most stretchy direction of the fabric. The bias is at a 45 degree angle to the warp and weft.
What angle does the bias run at?
45 degrees.
Which direction of fabric is the most stretchy?
The Bias.
What is the diagonal grain of the fabric called?
The Bias.
What is the SELVEDGE?
The neat firm edges on each side of the length of fabric.
Where on a piece of fabric is a selvedge?
On both sides. It is the neat firm edge.
Which part of the fabric will not fray?
The Selvedges.
