Q

Can you hear in space? Explain your answer.

A

No, because space is a “vacuum” meaning there are no particles in space to carry the sound waves to are ear -> sound waves can’t travel

Q

How does a guitar work?

A

When you pluck the strings, the strings vibrate creating a wave. These waves then make the air around vibrate and the particles in the air carry the sound wave to our ear. The sound wave then travels through our ear to reach the cochlea where it is sent to our brain via electrical signals.

Q

How can you change the pitch of a guitar?

A
  • to change pitch, you change the frequency
  • increased frequency -> wave length decreases
  • to decrease the wave length put finger on string to cut off the wave

Q

How do you change the volume of a guitar?

A
  • to change volume, you change the amplitude
  • increased amplitude -> volume increases
  • to increase the amplitude, pluck the string with more force
