Instrumentation (Week 2) Flashcards
What are the different classifications of instruments we discussed (5)?
Cutting instruments, Forceps, Retractors, Miscellaneous Instruments, Orthopedic Instruments
What are the different classifications of cutting instruments? (4)
Scalpel Handles and Blades, Scissors, Electrocautery, Laser Scalpels
What are cutting instruments used for?
To incise into or cut through tissues.
What are forceps used for?
Used to grasp tissue or dressings.
What are the two types of forceps?
1) Thumb forceps (resemble tweezers) 2) Hemostatic or Ringed Forceps (have ringed handles that are hinged in the middle like scissors)
What are retractors used for?
Used to pull and hold tissue out of the way of the immediate surgical site, so that the surgeon has the necessary region exposed.
What are the two types of retractors?
1) Handheld 2) Self-Retracting (held in place by screws or ratchets)
List miscellaneous instruments we discussed (6).
1) Bunt clip
2) Snook Hook
3) Suction Tips
4) Biopsy Instruments
5) Diagnostic Instruments
6) Ophthalmic Instruments
Describe function of bunt clip.
It is a miscellaneous instrument that secures bundles of ringed instruments together (kind of looks like a bunch of keys once all the instruments on it)

What are snook hooks used for?
They are used to exteriorize the uterus. (ovariohysterectomies aka spay)

What are suction tips used for?
Used with suction unit during abdominal or thoracic procedures (removes excess blood and/or fluid)
What are biopsy instruments used for?
Used in withdrawing tissue samples for testing

What are diagnostic instruments used for?
Endoscopes (used to look deep inside body)
(Jan says this will be discussed in further section)

Describe ophthalmic instruments and their function.
Very delicate, specialized instruments for eye-related procedures
Describe Orthopedic Instruments?
Wide variety of highly specialized instruments, most general practices only utilize a few basic instruments used for simple, common procedures.
What are the different classifications of Orthopedic Instruments (4)?
1) Gigli Wire and Handles
2) Bone Cutting Forceps
3) Jacobs Pin and Chuck
4) Cerclage Wire
(ADD PICS)
