When is an instrument rating required?
Acting as PIC under IFR or in weather less than VFR.
Carrying passengers for hire more than 50 NM or at night.
Flying in class A airspace.
Or flying under special VFR at night.
When can you log instrument time?
Only when operating by sole reference to instruments under actual or simulated IFR conditions.
What are the instrument currency requirements?
“6HITS”within the previous 6 months:
6 instrument approaches.
Holding procedures.
Intercepting, and tracking courses.
6 HITS not completed within previous 6 months. What can you do?
Fly 6 HITS with safety pilot under simulated conditions or fly them with instructor or examiner.
6 months since performing 6 HITS and past extra 6 months allowed. What must happen?
Must do a instrument proficiency check with instructor.
What personal documents are required to act as PIC?
Pilot certificate, medical certificate, ID (drivers license).
What aircraft documents are required to fly?
“ARROW”: airworthiness certificate, registration, operating limitations, weight and balance data.
What checklist can you do as a self assessment before flying?
“IMSAFE”, “PAVE”, or “DECIDE”.
What is “IMSAFE”?
Illness, medication, stress, alcohol, fatigue, emotions.
What is “PAVE”?
Pilot, aircraft, enVironment, external pressures.
What is “DECIDE”?
Detect, estimate, choose, identify, do, and evaluate.
What are the Maintenance inspections required for IFR flight?
“Aviate”: airworthiness directives, VOR check (30 days), inspections (annual, and 100 hour if operating for-hire), altimeter and pitot static system (24 months), transponder (24 months), ELT (12 months, replaced after 1 hour of use, or 50% of battery life).
What preflight info is required for IFR?
“NWKRAFT”: Notams, Weather reports and forecasts, Known traffic delays, Runway length of intended use, Alternatives available, Fuel required, Takeoff and landing performance data.
What are the minimum fuel requirements for IFR flight?
Enough fuel to get to destination+alternate+45 minutes at normal cruise.
When do you need an alternate?
If the destination has no IAP, or if weather within + or - 1 hour is forecasted to be less than 2,000 ft ceilings or visibility less than 3 statute miles.
