Instrument Ground Flashcards
What are the three fundamental skills of instrument flying?
- Instrument Cross Check
- Instrument Interpretation
- Aircraft Control
What are the “control” instruments?
- Attitude Indicator
- Manifold Pressure Gauge
- Engine Tachometer
- Fuel Flow Indicator
- Other (aircraft dependent)
What do the “control” instruments depict?
Immediate attitude and power indications
What are the “performance” instruments?
- Airspeed indicator
- Altimeter
- VSI
- Any other instrument aside from “Control” Instruments
What do the “performance” instruments indicate?
The aircraft’s actual performance
What instrumentation is used for the Control and Performance method?
Control, Performance and Navigation instrumentation
What are the “navigation” instruments?
- GPS
- VOR
- NDB
- Localizer/Glideslope
What do “navigation” instruments indicate?
The position of the aircraft in relation to a selected navigation facility or fix.
What are the two controlling techniques for instrument flying?
- Control and Performance
- Primary and Supporting
What are the procedure steps for Control and Performance technique?
- Establish - Attitude and power settings
- Trim - Until pressures are neutralized
- Cross-check - the performance instruments to desired output
- Adjust - attitude and/or power as necessary
What is the Primary and Supporting Method?
Aids the pilot in determining which instruments pertain the most in a given situation.
When is the Primary and Supporting method used?
When maintaining an attitude (pitch, bank, power and trim)
When is the Control and Performance method used?
When changing to a desired profile (Vy, cruise, descent)
For straight and level flight, what is the primary pitch instrument?
Altitude
For straight and level flight, what is a supporting pitch instrument?
VSI
