Analyse
Break up arguments etc, to id cause of a particular event/reveal general principles underlying phenomena
Compare
Look for similarities & differences between 2+ things, then reach a conclusion on your pref
Contrast
Set in opposition 2+ things to clearly id their differences & indiv characteristics
Criticise
Id weaknesses & give your judgement about their merit (back up with discussion of evidence and reasoning)
Define
Outline precise meaning, maybe examine different used definitions
Describe
Detailed and graphic account, sticking to facts/impression given
Discuss
Examine by argument (both sides), examine implications. Play devil’s advocate
Evaluate
Appraisal of something’s worth - give own opinions backed up
Explain
Interpret and account for an event by giving and analysing causes
Illustrate
Explain via diagrams, figures and concrete examples
Inrerpret
Reveal what you think is the meaning/significance, giving your own judgement
Justify
Show adequate grounds for a decision/conclusion by supporting with arguments and evidence. Answer main objections likely to be made
Outline
Give main features / general principles
Relate
Either 1) narrate a sequence of events
2) show how things are connected/to what extent they are alike
Review
Examine closely a subject or case put forward. Conclude with own judgement unless it’s merely a topic, then just examine all aspects in some detail
