Ambiguous term - Means a variety of different things - Monarch, queen, whole gov or state
Monarch plays a formal role, does have personal prerogatives (powers that only monarch can exercise)
Appointment of PM is imporatnt becuase without there is no one to exercise those powers on her behalf
Composition - hereditary title
