What does Candela mean?
A candela is the amount of light from a standard candle.
How does an incandescent lamp work?
A tungsten filament is placed inside a glass bulb filled with either a non reactive gas or all gases are removed from the bulb to prevent oxidation of the filament, then current flowing through the filament heats it to the point of incandescence.
What is the difference of a halogen light compared to a standard incandescent lamp?
Operate at higher temperatures. Tungsten element is contained within a halogen gas inside a bulb made of quartz that can withstand the higher temperatures. Radiates white light at a higher efficacy.
What should you not do with a quartz bulb?
Ensure not to touch it with your hands when installing it. The oil from your skin contaminates the quartz and reduces the life of the bulb.
What type of lights are included in electric discharge lighting and how do they work?
Includes fluorescent lamps and high intensity discharge(HID) lamps. Electric discharge lamps operate by establishing and maintaining a current flow through a vapour. The vapour will emit electromagnetic radiation.
What are ballasts meant for?
The are required to start the arc in electric discharge tubes and limit the current flow through the vapour.
What are the two basic types of fluorescent lamps?
Linear and compact. Linear are straight tubes of varying standard lengths and diameters. Compact where designed to replace standard incandescent lamps and may be self-ballasted.
What are examples of High Intensity Discharge(HID) lamps?
Mercury Vapour
High-pressure sodium
Metal-halide
What does LED stand for?
Light emitting diode.
