“Cutting through, massively” Analysis

Q

“Photograph” Analysis

A

-creates an immediate emotional reaction, done deliberately to disrupt any ridged social behaviours

•Used as a means of control (reflects his moral authority)
-it’s a key device for setting off each characters journey - (inspector= consciousness via forcing them to reflect

(+Irony that he controls those who are used to controlling others)

Q

“It’s better to ask of the earth than to take it” Analysis

A

Inspector is confident in lecturing the Birlings= not affected by status.
(inspectors moral authority has grown throughout the play.)
-A criticism of capitalism + A direct contrast to Mr Birling from the beginning
(Resonates with a post-war audience as “taking it” refers to those in war who didn’t follow democracy)
