Inspector Goole Flashcards
Moral force- resistant to corruption
Opposed to and exempt from the immorality and corruption of society
Refuses to drink of port ‘no thank you… I’m on duty’ alcohol bears connotations of immoral behaviour so his is refusal is symbolic to rejecting immoral behaviour
Offer of an alcohol drink to an on duty policeman is an act of mr b trying to corrupt him
Utilisation of a cyclical structure as play also ends with the inspector rejecting mr bs attempt of bribery. Mr b says he’ll give ‘thousands’ which he responds with ‘you’re offering money at the wrong time’ cyclical structure used to demonstrate consistency of his moral actions while simultaneously presenting mr b as immoral throughout
Audience draws upon their political differences as the cause (capitalism= immorality, socialism= morality)
Socialist views
Inspectors views noticeably too progressive for pre suffrage 1912 society more aligned with modern audience
Audience encouraged to realise a persons class is irrelevant to their degree of responsibility as ‘public men… have responsibility as well as privilege’
He sees Eva as individual, never refers to her as a girl always by her name contrasts birling family perceive her as insignificant she’s just a ‘girl’ due to her lower social status as a working class citizen. Inspector sees her as individual who was significance ‘promising little life’ his morality is due to his awareness of social responsibility and impact of people’s actions on all of society
Because he rejects capitalism he rejects immorality which are both presented as synonymous
War
Structure of okay mirrors both world wars. Initial arrival of inspector portrayed as being due to society’s capitalist flaws- represents ww1
The intermittent duration between world wars highlighted as the characters have opportunity to change and accept greater social responsibility
Characters fail this and phone calls at birling residence
End of play is symbolic to ww2 as it’s the ‘fire blood and anguish’ which inspector warns characters about
To stop society failing again society needs to be reconstructed and more responsible than it was in 1912
World wars caused by greed and capitalist views in society but birling chose to dismiss inspector as ‘socialist or some sort of crank’
Repeating deaths of Eva smith reflects repeating world wars
‘It’s better to ask for the earth than to take it’
Symbolises capitalism class equality with juxtaposing verbs ‘ask’ ‘take’ showing how upper class can take but working class must ask and hope
‘We don’t live alone, we are members of one body. We are responsible for each other’
Doesn’t believe in class division ‘we’
Anaphora
Attacks capitalism related to Christianity ‘members of one body’ in bible if you’re Christian you should be socialist most of his audience was Christian
‘Their lives, their hopes, they’re fears’
Triadic structure
Juxtaposition ‘hope’ ‘fear’
Up to upper class to determine how they treat working class
