Inspector Goole Act 2
He argued that everyone in society have duties towards each others welfare and have a collective and social responsibility to take care of each other. Mr Birling views about responsibility are unfitting for a character of his position

Discussing that their families may eventually join forces. Arthur’s priorities are on the business and believes he needs to make as much profit as possible, regardless of the consequences . No concern towards workers who may need higher wages to live.

Sheila Act 1
Working class women were the cheapest forms of labour available to factory owners. Early indications she’s a caring character. This quote reveals her compassion and empathy for the less fortunate than herself. The word ‘but shows how she has interrupted and challenged her fathers views, which we see more and more

Eric, Act 1
described as someone who is uncomfortable in the family, separates him. bad family relationship with him and do not take him seriously.

consequences of their selfish attitudes, if they do not begin to take responsibility for other people, the society will face terribly consequences.
Also referring to WW1 and 2 that selfish and greed cause wars.

shows that while a single action might not have devastating results, the build up of a series of bad events can ultimately lead to serious consequences.
Priestly encourages the audience to think carefully about the dangerous effect their actions can have if they do not think of others and abuse their power.

uses the word ‘mummy’ to suggest she is quite child-like at the start of the play.
Priestly then shows her changing as the play goes on. Stereotypical pre-war, high-class woman who’s role is to marry a wealthy man and produce children|

She’s gone from calling her mother
‘mummy’ in act 1 to now formally
‘mother’ highlighting her change in maturity and her willingness to disagree with her. The inspector has revealed her parents are not as perfect as her illusions told her. think” reflects how she is now able to express her own mind – she it taking responsibility for her own thoughts and expressing them

Sheila Act 3.
More socially aware and upset by family’s actions. She is worried that her parents haven’t learned anything, therefore could cause more disasters.

Mrs birling Act 1.
She tells off her husband for talking about this when they are celebrating and her daughter is present as it was not considered appropriate for a woman to take part in such conversation. She doesn’t want to ruin her family’s reputation by making Gerald think they do not know how to behave in society.

Act 3. Eric loudly dismissed his father in front of everyone. no respect for his father. He is disgusted that his parents are taking no responsibility for their actions and if fed up with his fathers obsessions.

Mrs Birling Act 2.
She feels that Sheila should not be exposed to the nasty reality of the tale of Eva Smith bc she wants to protect her from the harsh truths of life.
Suggests the upper class tried to avoid the hardships of working class people-Mrs birling is happy for Eva Smith to experience them bc she was lower class.
“It would be much better if Sheila didn’t listen to this story at all”
Mrs Birling Act 3.
Shes smug and views it as a victory that she didn’t accept any blame from the inspector and mocks the others for telling the truth to him- emphasises her selfish and cold nature.

Mr Birling Act 1.
Mr Birling states that we only have a responsibility to ourselves and to our families; he dismisses the idea of community and social responsibility as
‘nonsense”
