Inspector Calls - Mr Birling Flashcards
“The titanic - she sales next week…unsinkable, absolutely unsinkable”
Shows that Mr Birling is nieve. It could also represent how he thinks that his family are untouchable until the inspector comes and destroys them.
“I’m talking as a hard-headed practical man of business”
Shows that he has a capitalist view and the only thing he cares about is the money.
“Probably a socialist or some sort of crank.”
He is being dismissive and this solidifies his place as a capitalist. However that fact that he calls socialists “cranks” shows how he wants to be separated from them.
“You’ll hear people say war is inevitable…fiddlesticks”
Also shows that he is nieve and he feel that he knows what is giving to happen as the world war actually happens which he does not think is going to happen.
